IB Chemistry

The GLF and Sbic courses prepare students for both the IB Diploma and the Swiss Matura. Currently, within the framework of the Sbic course, students can choose to take IB Chemistry at SL or HL. Together the GLF and Sbic courses cover all of the material of the SL and the majority of the material for HL Chemistry. The practical work (30 hours for SL and 50 hours for HL) takes place during GLF lessons in the 3rd year and Sbic lessons in the 3rd and 4th years.

Additional block time (10 hours) is provided during one of our IB working weeks for the Chemistry Internal Assessment (IA) and the Group 4 project (10 hours) takes place in another IB working week.

Coaching

Students receive additional coaching from a Chemistry teacher (this is obligatory for HL students and strongly recommended in the case of SL students). Coaching is in the form of a three-weekly cycle of colloquia, self-study and question-and-answer times. In this context, students receive assistance in preparing for the exams (IB mock exams, review questions etc.) and for the IA.

Textbook

I recommend the Chemistry Study Guide 2014 edition: Oxford IB Diploma Programme by Geoffrey Neuss. The guide covers everything you need to know for the SL and HL and is written in a concise and easy to follow style (only 196 pages). Both paperback and Kindle versions are available.
